Course overview: the study and performance of jazz music, jazz improvisation, and to a lesser extent, jazz history. This is a performance class which meets every day (period 6) and requires home musical practice– that is their “homework.”
Students are expected to have their music and folders everyday. It is ideal if the students are engaged in private lessons. The will also be written assignments in jazz theory and history.
Students are asked to purchase “Chop Master Vol 2” (w/ NO CD). These books are available at Music and Arts Stores for about $7.95. Specify YOUR instrument, These are excellent method books that teach jazz improvisation.
Grading Policy– A weekly grade will be posted on “Teacher Ease” for your viewing. This weekly grade is comprised of: 80% Daily Rehearsals– being prepared for with instrument, reeds, sheet music, and parts prepared by home practice. 20% Quizzes, assignments (written and playing), jazz theory, and jazz history.

Thursday, October 29th -Fall Jazz Concert Wednesday, January 7th -Winter Jazz Concert combined with BMMS Saturday, January 23rd -MD Jazz Conference at Towson. Time TBA Thursday, April 15th -Spring Community Jazz Event
Please know that other opportunities for performances in the community (example: Inner Harbor) may arise and will be announced as soon as we have confirmation. These community performance and an important part of being a musician and a student.
