Concert Band

Dr. Max Vanderbeek- earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland, College Park (2000) his Master of Music degree from the University of South Florida, Tampa (1988) and his Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from the State University of New York at Purchase (1984). He graduated from Wilde Lake High School (1978) under the baton of John "Buzz" Jones.

He discovered a passion for working with college and high school age student musicians and has pursued that dream for over 20 years.

Max has a rich and varied background of musical experiences including; attending a Jimi Hendrix concert when he was 10 yrs old in Hawaii with his parents, performing for President Bill and Hillary Clinton (1999) at a private party in East Hampton New York, performing at the Kennedy Center as a featured U.M.C.P.

graduate student (1995) and performing as a musician on the Norwegian Caribbean Cruise Lines (1988), and many more.

 

 

Dr. Vanderbeek has served on the faculty at Howard Community College as well as the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. He currently teaches one class in the U.M.B.C. Music Department "Seminar in Music Education" as well as teaching private percussion students. Since his appointment at Centennial High School in 1998 the C.H.S. Bands have consistently earned high "Superior" ratings at the District and State Festivals. The bands have traveled and performed in New Orleans (2002), Carnegie Hall New York (2007), and many others.

 

Max lives in Relay, Maryland in a historic home built in 1871 with his wife, Laura, and sons Ryan 15 and Clay 13 and their dog "Sparky"

Max enjoys camping with his boys, going to Patapsco Park with Laura, and performing with his older son in their party band "R.A.M."

at the Inner Harbor.
